Common Quail

Small pear-shaped gamebird. Breeds in taller grassland and grain fields from western Europe east to central Asia and winters in similar habitat in Africa,

Northern Bobwhite

Small and rotund with intricate brown, black, and white patterning. Some striking variation in plumage across range. Usually on the ground, but occasionally perches in trees when singing.

Small to medium-sized quail. Mass 140–170 g; male slightly heavier than female. Tail rounded, with 12 rectrices that range in length from 49 to 70 mm. Wing length 90–120 mm.

Blue Brested Quail

Tiny, round quail of lowland plains, grassy hillsides, and farmland. Generally uncommon and often glimpsed only briefly as it flushes from almost underfoot. Male gorgeously attired, with a blue head and breast, deep cinnamon belly, and neat black-and-white throat markings. Female brown with a paler belly and a plain face; compare to the strong white brow of the larger Japanese Quail. Males give a descending, plaintive whistle, "tew-tew", and a raspy, snoring call.

Gambel's Quail

Small and rotund with obvious teardrop-shaped plumes protruding from forehead. Looks gray and brown at a distance; look for buffy belly with a black patch.

California Quail

Scaled (Blue) Quail

Small and rotund with intricate scaly pattern on neck and body. Looks silvery gray and brown overall; note short "cotton-top" crest. Plain face with no black, unlike Gambel's Quail. Look for small groups scurrying around through grasslands or under cactus and mesquite trees in desert habitats.  Listen for hoarse calls.

Montezuma Quail

A remarkably patterned quail, uncommon and difficult to spot as it runs through open grassy woodlands in dry regions of the southwest U.S. and Mexico. Male looks like he's are wearing a black-and-white helmet; otherwise look for bold spots and streaks covering body and wings. Rarely flies unless flushed at very close range; most often seen crossing a road or trail.

Roul Roul

This charming ball of a bird can be difficult to see as it forages quietly on the forest floor within its preferred wet forest habitat. Male has a glossy black body and bristly reddish pompom crest. Female is moss-green with warm cinnamon-brown wings. Both sexes have a bright red ring around the eye. Listen for its song, a series of piercing tremulous whistles.

Crimson headed Partridge

Unmistakable black partridge with a bright red head (hence the alternative name, "Bloodhead"). Inhabits Bornean montane forest (roughly 1000–1700 m) but may be encountered outside this altitudinal range. Gives a loud, ringing, somewhat metallic "ring-YING, ring-YING, ring-YING".

Chinese Bamboo Partridge

While common in bamboo forest, this loud and colorful partridge can be found in a range of other shrubby and semiopen habitats. The combination of a gray-blue brow and chest, orange cheeks and breast band, and large black spots on brownish yellow flanks make this species unmistakable in its range.

Mountain Bamboo Partridge

An intricately patterned partridge of various scrubby habitats; not restricted to bamboo thickets. Usually seen singly or in pairs. Often forages under cover but will venture out into the open; less tied to extensively thick cover than many small partridges. Song is a loud clattering series of high squealing notes, often initiated by a hoarse, throaty shriek.

Hill's Partridge

A brightly-colored game bird with an intricate head pattern and a body shaped like a football. Brick-red on the crown serves to distinguish the male from the similar Rufous-throated Partridge, while male Hill Partridge also lacks orange on the throat. 
Moves around in convoys through dense vegetation in mid- to high-altitude forests.

Arabian Partridge

Handsome partridge of southern Arabia. Pale gray overall, with a tan patch on the neck, black-and-white slashes along the sides, and a complicated black-and-white facial pattern. Usually in small groups. The most common vocalization is a series of "chok" calls that becomes quicker and more emphatic as it progresses.

Philby's Partridge

Handsome partridge of the southwest Arabian mountains. Found in dry, rocky habitat at middle and high elevations, with a preference for bush areas. The common vocalization, given mainly early and late in the day, is an emphatic series of "chuk-chek-chuk" calls. Also gives clucking calls, especially when flushed.

See-See Partridge


Eye-catching small gamebird of barren hills and wadis in arid and semi-arid areas. Territorial song of the male very similar to Sand Partridge, a slightly more rapid and higher-pitched "Hi-hi-hi-hi-…" Both partridges produce the same wing-whistle upon take off.


Habitat: SE Turkey, NE Syria , Armenia and Iraq, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, W Tajikistan and Pakistan.

Barbary Partridge

Beautiful, pale-faced partridge with a spangled shawl, sexes similar. Often found on rocky slopes and dry areas of alpine forest up to 3,000 m, but in some regions, can be found in open flatter areas with sparse grass and low bushes. Highly territorial; their oft-delivered call is short series of "kchek" notes. Prefers to run away rather than fly.

Chukar Partridge
