Mountain Peacock Pheasant

Long-tailed, small-headed, maroon-and-gray pheasant. Male has a longer tail than the female, and his green spots are brighter; they gleam like hewn emeralds when he is displaying. Found in foothill and montane forest. Forages quietly on the ground, scratching through leaf litter. Typically shy and very difficult to see; only reliably and easily viewed where habituated.

Palawan Peacock Pheasant

A large, spectacular ground bird of forest on Palawan with a fairly long tail and a crest. Female is entirely brown with a pale face. Male has a black body with blue marks on the wings, a grayish, finely speckled back and tail with blue peacock "eyes," white marks on the face, and a red eye-ring.

Swinhoe Pheasant

Secretive, handsome endemic pheasant of Taiwan's mountains. Male slaty blue from nape to flanks, with contrasting white upper back, brown mantle, and dark gray wings; female mostly rich brown with pale markings above. Both sexes have red facial skin, more extensive in male. Forages quietly in pairs in the forest understory, occasionally along forest edge on trails or roads. Both sexes give subtle clucking calls and a high-pitched squeaky alarm call.

Siamese Fireback

Remarkably plumaged terrestrial bird of lowland and foothill broadleaf forests, most often encountered on trails and roadsides in the early morning. Male blue-gray with a bright red face and long, glossy black tail. Namesake "fire back", a splotch of bright iridescent coloration on the rump, is difficult to see.

Mikado Pheasant

A stunning pheasant species endemic to Taiwan, the male a rich slaty blue with white markings and red facial skin, the female rich brown with extensive pale feather edges. Generally retiring, foraging quietly in the undergrowth of montane forests, but occasionally seen in the open, particularly in places where fed. Usually seen singly, in pairs, or in small family units (female with young). In breeding season, males drum with wings and give shrill whistling calls

Reeve's Pheasant

A large terrestrial bird of hill forests. Male has very long black-and-white tail and is strikingly patterned: appears crafted out of black-edged gold and white porcelain scales. Female has peach belly and dark comma-like stripe behind the eye. Courting male makes a series of sputtering, bubbling, chirping, and squeaking notes, as well as loud and resonant wing-drumming. Contact and alarm calls are similarly sputtering, varying in loudness.

Golden Pheasant

Shy and surprisingly difficult to find in mixed and conifer woodland, where it runs quickly from detected disturbance. Red-and-gold male stunning and unmistakable. Native to China but introduced very locally in Britain and Hawaii; however, captive birds might escape anywhere.

Lady Amherst Pheasant

Attractive terrestrial bird of hilly forests with dense patches of undergrowth. Stately male is resplendent, with long striped tail, white belly, and black-and-white scaling on neck. Female brown with black striping and gray skin around the eye. Female Golden Pheasant similar but grayer in coloration and has smaller pinkish eye patch. Moves about quietly when feeding in dense vegetation, usually singly or in pairs.

Silver Pheasant

Large and spectacular pheasant found in forested areas. Variable across its large range, but the long-tailed male has either white or silvery-gray upperparts with a black crest, breast, and belly. Northern males are whiter above than their southern counterparts, though they still have some light black markings on the wings and back.

Malayan Peacock Pheasant

Odd-looking stumpy pheasant. Dull brown with iridescent green and blue eye-spots on the upperparts; these are much brighter and more prominent in the male. Also note male's more thickset appearance, brighter red facial skin, and strange forward-pointing crest. Moves quietly through lowland rainforest; males give complex displays during the breeding season.

Koklass Pheasant

A large and timid partridge-like pheasant of high-to-mid-altitude forests. Males have a silver-plumed body, maroon breast stripe, white neck patch, and dark greenish-black head topped with a long crest that, when erect, gives it the profile of a startled rabbit. Females are streaky brown with a faded version of the male's white patch and breast stripe; note her short crest, buffy eyebrow, white throat bordered by dark.

Himalaya Monal 

Decked out in all the colors of the rainbow, the male is the image of iridescence; green crested head, red neck, green shoulders, blue back, orange tail, and black underparts. When displaying or flushed, flashes a bright white patch on the back. Found in Himalayan hill forest, typically in areas with extensive rhododendron and bamboo-dominated understory.
